Why Run a Churn Audit Before Buying Anything?
Most SaaS founders know churn is a problem. Far fewer know how much of it comes from failed payments versus customers actively leaving. Those are two different problems with two different fixes:
- Voluntary churn — a customer decides to cancel. Fixed with better onboarding, cancel flows, and product work.
- Involuntary churn — a payment fails and the subscription quietly lapses. Fixed with retries, dunning emails, and card updates. (More on the split in involuntary vs. voluntary churn.)
A free audit tells you which problem you actually have, and how big it is in dollars, before you spend money on a tool. Several vendors now offer one for Stripe accounts. They are not interchangeable: they ask for different levels of access, look at different time windows, and answer different questions.
We compared six options, including our own. Where a vendor's page didn't state something, we say "not stated" rather than guess.
How We Compared Them
For each audit, we looked at:
- Signup — do you need to create an account first?
- Access — OAuth app, restricted API key, or a CSV export?
- Speed — how long until you see a report?
- Coverage — involuntary churn, voluntary churn, cohorts, or all of them?
- Paywall — is the full report free?
- Data handling — what happens to your key and report afterward?
Comparison Table
| Audit | Signup | Access | Speed | Covers | Data handling | |-------|--------|--------|-------|--------|---------------| | Churnkey Churn Audit | Connect payment provider (account details not stated) | Read-only connection | Not stated on current page | Voluntary + involuntary, cohorts, revenue/logo churn | Read-only; retention not stated | | ChurnBot Audit | No account | Read-only restricted key | ~60 seconds | Pending cancellations, failed payments, expiring cards, health score | Key discarded after analysis; reports deleted after 14 days | | Chaser Revenue Audit | Yes | Stripe OAuth, least-privilege scopes | Under a minute | Involuntary (90-day lookback) | Read-only; access revocable | | Triggla Churn Leak Audit | Not needed for the checklist | None — it's a checklist | Self-paced | 8 lifecycle checkpoints | No data shared | | Rechurn Audit | No account (email only) | Read-only restricted key, CSV, or OAuth | ~3 minutes | Involuntary (30-day window + current past_due) | Key verified read-only, discarded after the report | | Stripe Revenue Recovery analytics | Already in your Dashboard | Native | Instant | Involuntary (subscriptions only) | Stays in Stripe |
1. Churnkey Churn Audit — Best for the Full Churn Picture
What it is: A free churn dashboard. Churnkey's audit page describes it as "completely free to use, with no obligation." You connect your payment provider, which gives Churnkey "read-only access to your churn data."
What it covers:
- Churn rate, gross monthly churn revenue, and net monthly churn
- Revenue and logo churn trends over months and quarters
- An interactive cohort view of retention over a subscriber's first 12 months
- Whether you're losing many small customers or a few large ones
Strengths: This is the broadest audit on the list. It covers voluntary churn and cohorts, which the involuntary-only audits (including ours) don't. If you don't yet know whether your churn problem is payments or product, start here.
Watch out for: The current page doesn't state turnaround time or data retention. Churnkey's original launch post (2021) described a sign-up flow with the report delivered in 24 hours, and noted they might pitch Churnkey if the audit showed a need. The product may have changed since. Churnkey's paid plans start in the hundreds per month (see our Churnkey alternatives breakdown).
2. ChurnBot Audit — Fastest Snapshot
What it is: A free diagnostic at churnbot.co/audit. No account needed. A link opens Stripe with read-only permissions pre-selected, and you paste the resulting key.
What it covers:
- A churn health score with a letter grade
- Pending cancellations, with dates and MRR impact
- Failed payments where Stripe has stopped retrying
- Cards expiring within 60 days
- Industry benchmarks, plus PDF and CSV export
Strengths: Very quick ("60 second analysis"). Its data handling is spelled out: the key is "used once and immediately discarded," and reports are "automatically deleted after 14 days." The expiring-cards list is useful for pre-dunning.
Watch out for: It's a snapshot of what's at risk right now. It doesn't break failures down by decline code, and no recovery product is live yet ("coming soon"), so you need a separate tool to act on the findings.
3. Chaser Revenue Audit — Best Recovery Projection
What it is: A free audit from Chaser that replays 90 days of your Stripe history and estimates what Chaser would have recovered.
Access: Stripe's "official 1-click OAuth" with least-privilege scopes. Master secret keys are never touched, and you see the exact scopes on Stripe's consent screen. You create an account to run it.
What it covers: Recoverable revenue from failed payments over a 90-day lookback, down to the specific accounts, computed "in under a minute." Cancellation recovery is part of Chaser's paid plans, not the audit.
Strengths: A 90-day window smooths out a lucky or unlucky month. OAuth is a clean permission model if you'd rather not handle API keys.
Watch out for: Signup is required. The headline number is framed as what Chaser would recover, so treat it as a vendor projection, not an independent benchmark. After the audit, Chaser is $79/month with a 30-day trial.
Stop losing revenue to failed payments
Rechurn recovers failed charges automatically with AI-powered dunning sequences. No monthly fee — 15% of what we recover, only when we recover it.
Run My Free Audit4. Triggla Churn Leak Audit — Best as a Checklist
What it is: Despite the name, Triggla's churn leak audit doesn't scan your Stripe data. It's a free framework of eight lifecycle checkpoints: failed payments, trial reminders, cancellation recovery, refund tracking, inactivity prompts, separating repeat buyers, and revenue measurement.
Strengths: Shares no data at all. It works as a planning document for teams mapping out which recovery flows they're missing, beyond just payments.
Watch out for: You get no numbers. It won't tell you how much revenue you're losing. Automating any of the flows requires signing up for Triggla's paid platform.
5. Rechurn Audit — Best No-Signup Failed-Payment Deep Dive
What it is: Our free audit at audit.rechurn.io. You give an email plus a read-only Stripe key and get a report in about three minutes. No account, no demo call.
Access: You create a restricted, read-only key and choose its permissions yourself. Before reading any data, we check that the key can't modify anything, and we discard it after the report is generated. If you'd rather not create a key, you can upload a Stripe CSV export instead, or connect with OAuth.
What it covers:
- MRR at risk from
past_duesubscriptions - Failed payment volume over the last 30 days
- Recoverable subscriptions
- Failure reasons broken down by decline code
- Retry pattern analysis: how Stripe's retries are playing out
- Failures by card brand and country
- An estimated recovery range
- A playbook for your top failure reason
- CSV export of the findings
Strengths: The full report is free, with no paywall on any finding. The decline-code breakdown and retry analysis tell you why payments fail, which decides the fix: a soft decline needs better retry timing, a hard decline needs a card update.
Watch out for: We're honest about the limits:
- It covers involuntary churn only. No voluntary churn, cancellations, or cohort analysis. For that, use Churnkey's dashboard.
- The window is 30 days plus current
past_duesubscriptions, shorter than Chaser's 90 days. - It's Stripe-only.
If you later activate recovery, Rechurn charges 15% of the revenue its emails recover, with no monthly fee. Payments Stripe recovers on its own retries are never billed.
6. Stripe Revenue Recovery Analytics — The DIY Baseline
Before any third-party audit, check what Stripe already shows you. The revenue recovery overview in your Dashboard includes:
- Failed payments and failure rate: subscription payment volume that failed on the first attempt
- Recovered payments and recovery rate: volume recovered "by any means" after a failure
- Recovered volume by method: Stripe retries, Stripe emails, or "other"
- Failed volume by decline reason: your top five decline codes
- Top customers in recovery: subscribers whose payments are still being retried
Strengths: Free, instant, and your data never leaves Stripe.
Watch out for: Per Stripe's docs, the data "represents recurring subscription payments only and excludes the first invoice payment following a trial." Only the top five decline codes are shown, and there's no playbook for acting on them. We cover the gaps in what Stripe's recovery analytics doesn't tell you, and the manual route in how to find failed payments in Stripe.
Tip
Whichever audit you run, give it a restricted, read-only key — never your secret key. A restricted key with read permissions can't create charges, issue refunds, or change subscriptions. If a tool asks for full access just to produce a report, that's a red flag.
Which One Should You Use?
| Your situation | Best audit | |----------------|-----------| | You don't know if churn is product or payments | Churnkey Churn Audit | | You want a 60-second risk snapshot, including expiring cards | ChurnBot | | You want a 90-day recovery estimate and prefer OAuth | Chaser | | You want a planning checklist without sharing data | Triggla | | You want a no-signup breakdown of why payments fail, with a playbook | Rechurn | | You just want the headline numbers | Stripe's revenue recovery overview |
These tools aren't mutually exclusive. A sensible sequence:
- Open Stripe's revenue recovery overview. If your failure rate is low and your recovery rate high, you may not need anything else.
- Run one involuntary-churn audit (Rechurn, ChurnBot, or Chaser) to size the dollars at stake and see the decline-code mix.
- If voluntary churn looks bigger, run Churnkey's dashboard for the cohort view.
Then compare the numbers against failed payment recovery rate benchmarks to see whether the gap justifies a tool at all.
What to Look For in Any Audit Report
Whichever tool you pick, these are the numbers that drive decisions:
- Failed payment volume, in dollars. Not a percentage. This is the ceiling on what any recovery tool can do for you.
- Decline code mix. A high share of
insufficient_fundsmeans retry timing matters most. A high share ofexpired_cardordo_not_honormeans you need the customer to act, via email and a card update link. See our decline code reference. - Recovery by method. How much Stripe's retries already recover. A tool should only get credit for what it adds on top.
- Past-due MRR right now. The money you can still save this month, before subscriptions cancel. (Where subscriptions end up depends on your settings. See past_due vs. unpaid vs. canceled.)
If you want to turn those numbers into an annual figure, plug them into our ROI calculator.
Key Takeaways
- Audits answer different questions — Churnkey covers the full churn picture, including voluntary churn and cohorts; ChurnBot, Chaser, and Rechurn focus on failed payments; Triggla is a checklist with no data
- Access models differ — restricted read-only keys (ChurnBot, Rechurn), OAuth (Chaser, also available in Rechurn), or no access at all (Triggla)
- Only give read-only access — no audit needs to create charges or change subscriptions
- Window length matters — 30 days shows what's happening now; 90 days smooths out outliers
- Vendor projections are sales estimates — compare any "you'd recover $X" figure against independent benchmarks
- Start with Stripe's own analytics — it's free and instant, and it tells you whether a deeper audit is worth ten minutes
